Polarity Therapy

Blending modern science with ancient wisdom for optimal health

Unlike Ayurvedic medicine, which makes no secret of the fact that it is deeply rooted in spirituality, polarity therapy purports to be blend of modern science and ancient spiritual wisdom.

The American Polarity Therapy Association's website claims, "Scientifically, [polarity therapy] works with the Human Energy Field, electromagnetic patterns expressed in mental, emotional and physical experience … There are three types of energy fields in the human body: Long line currents that run north to south on the body; transverse currents that run east-west in the body; and spiral currents that start at the navel and expand outward."

Polarity therapy is based on the belief that positive and negative poles exist in every cell within our bodies. The body is gently manipulated via massage to balance the positive and negative energies. In addition to physical manipulation, blockages and toxins are eliminated through a gentle cleansing diet and simple exercises. Treatments are suggested in a series of four.

Polarity therapy treatments will often incorporate healthy lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and increased levels of activity, sometimes in the form of stretching or yoga. We already know how beneficial a healthy diet and exercise are. And if you throw massage therapy into the mix, it's no wonder people feel better after undergoing polarity therapy.

During a polarity therapy session you will receive the four vital parts of this treatment - bodywork, diet, exercise and self-awareness. The patient must be exposed to all four in order to achieve total health and wellness.

  • Bodywork - the first portion of your polarity therapy treatment aims to rebalance your essential energies. In polarity therapy, your energy will either be positive, negative or neutral. The goal of this therapy is to bring balance to your internal energy so that it remains in a neutral state. This is achieved through gentle energy bodywork - or gentle touch - that directs the patient's own energy to the proper places within the body.
  • Diet - a detoxification, or cleansing of the body, is essential for the healthy function of the body. Polarity patients are prescribed a purification diet that will first cleanse, then put you on the road to long-term wellness.
  • Exercise - your therapist will teach you specific Polarity yoga exercises, which are gentle stretches and poses to help distress the body and restore proper balance.

  • Self-awareness - your polarity therapist will help you first identify specific goals, and what's preventing them from happening. Once the sources of tension are identified, the therapist will introduce techniques to help you eliminate the sources of anxiety.
