Qigong

Qigong is an ancient art form that has been an important part of Chinese culture, as with many of massage’s complimentary therapies. It is studied and practiced not only to achieve good health, but to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between human beings and the environment. Qigong can be roughly translated into, “the study of vital energy.”

Today, qigong is most often referred to as the science and art of posture, movement, breath, and sound, to cleanse and circulate the Qi throughout the body. The Qi is our innate vital force or energy flow that keeps the body strong and healthy. Everyone is born with Qi, but needs to be taught how to use it. Thus qigong helps us to improve our health and performance, creates a transformation of consciousness, and provides greater power for the martial arts. There are four main types of Qigong: Taoist, Buddhist, medical, and martial arts.

Qigong teaches you how to regulate your mind, body, breathing and vocalization, through which you will be increasing your resistance to disease and illness. With qigong you will build a strong immune system, preventing illnesses, and creating a strong state of health. The main goal of the technique is to strengthen and balance one’s Qi. All of the types of qigong focus on the same three techniques: postural positioning (either while moving or remaining still), a variety of breathing techniques, and mental focus. These rhythmic movements help to reduce stress, increase vitality and enhance the immune system. It has also been proven to improve the functions of the digestive, cardiovascular, circulatory, respiratory, and lymphatic systems.

Qigong is also based on the belief that illness is the result of a battle between pathogenic influences and the Qi in the body. When the body is at a normal energetic state, it is capable of regulating effective physiological functions and will help the body adjust to changes in the environment. But when pathogenic influences are stronger then one’s energy force, then the body will begin to shut down and illness will occur. Therefore, the qigong philosophy of treating illness is to either eliminate the source of the pathogenic influence or to strengthen the Qi. With strengthening of the Qi, the patient will regain energetic balance within the body and will be able to fight off the illness. A high amount of Qi will boost the immune system and protect the body from any disease that tries to attack. Only when the Qi is in a state of weakness will the pathogens be able to affect the body. This approach to fighting illness also makes use of acupuncture, herbs, massage, and moxibustion to offset the affects of the illness.

One of the most important effects of qigong is its effectiveness in achieving a strong connection between the body, mind and soul. When these three aspects of our being are connected we feel encouraged to lead a more positive life and dispose of harmful behaviors. Through the practice of qigong, we can then lead a balanced life that brings us harmony and enjoyment.
