Tai Chi
Tai chi can be translated into the “Supreme Ultimate Force.” It is associated with the Chinese principle of yin-yang in that everything in life has a dynamic duality. Tai chi is then practiced to restore the body’s natural balance.
Western tai chi is most easily described as a combination of yoga and mediation set in motion. The technique has a number of different forms, each of which consists of their own unique sequence of movements. The movements are derived from ancient Chinese forms as well as from the martial arts. The movement sequences in tai chi are performed slowly and gracefully, smoothly transitioning between each position. Most people do not practice tai chi for the martial arts application, but mainly because it is a great meditative exercise for the body and mind.
The practice of tai chi is based on the principle of “Chi”. The Chi is described as the life force of all living things. Therefore one of the main goals of the technique is to promote the healthy flow of chi throughout the body. This is believed to enhance the vitality and healthiness of the entire body. The circulation of the chi closely follows the path of the vascular and nervous systems of the body, and thus tai chi is closely related to other oriental healing therapies, such as Tui Na Massage, that rely on this similar concept.
Tai chi also helps to improve the health and relaxation of the mind. Since the technique combines aspects of meditation, this procedure will enhance mental functioning and clarity while providing tranquility of the mind. Through the correct execution of the tai chi exercises, the body can be taught proper alignment, balance, posture, rhythm of movement, movement patterns, and fine motor control. In the long run, the practice of this exercise can lead to improvement in walking, running, standing, moving, and many other related movements.
During a tai chi class you should dress in comfortable loose-fitting clothing to ensure ease of movement. Typically the sequence of moves will be completed in silence as to maintain focus and concentration, but your instructor will provide guidance and answer your questions when needed. Breathing normally is also important during the exercises. The body will automatically adjust its breathing for you and become deeper as the lesson progresses.
The exercises are based on the old philosophy of Taoism. Taoism is a spiritual Chinese tradition that is based on the elements of the tranquility and beauty of nature. It teaches a calm and reflective philosophy on life.
Tai chi also has applications in the martial arts because many of its moves are derived from the martial traditions. People who continue to practice tai chi for a long period of their life can become very skilled in the martial arts. However, it is focused on channeling this potentially dangerous energy, in the form of a punch or a kick, away from oneself in a non-dangerous way.
It is practiced to help improve overall health and to achieve an active, healthy lifestyle. It is performed as a means to increase strength, flexibility, and movement of the body, as well as reducing stress and the risk of injury.
