Massage Training in Arizona

Question:

My name is Jenelle and I am interested in becoming a massage therapist. Currently I am in my senior year, and want to know if there any places where I could get training without having to register in a massage school? If you have any info I would appreciate it! I am in Phoenix, Arizona. If you know of any organizations here that could help me.

Answer:

There are several things to consider when selecting training courses in Massage Therapy. This type of study requires hands on experience. If you want to pursue a career in Massage Therapy the first step is to find the right course curriculum for you.

Apart from costs and location the main considerations should be:

  • Training Staff - Make sure that the teaching staff has at least three to five years clinical experience and ideally (though not essential) teaching qualifications.
  • Student Numbers - Smaller classes are better. Make sure that there aren't more than 12 students to a teacher.
  • Breadth of Knowledge - Find out what is covered in each module, for example how many different types of massage are covered. As well, there should be lessons concerning anatomy and physiology needs to cover the skin, the skeletal and muscular systems, the respiratory system, the nervous and endocrine systems, as well as pathology of these systems.
  • Supervised Practice - Look at opportunities for supervised clinical experience - how much hands-on practice will you get?
  • Assessment - Some people are better with coursework; while others prefer a written exam. Make sure the balance is appropriate for you.
  • Visit the college - talk to current students and ask to sit in on a class before registering for any course.
