Liability Insurance

Question:

MI just passed the CMTO examinations, and Im wondering if you have any links for companies that provide the Liability Insurance requirement for Registration, besides the OMTA?

Thanks!

Answer:

Professional Liability Insurance provides a massage therapist with insurance against injury to their clients resulting from treatment or injury incurred in the clinic/treatment room. As a registered massage therapist practicing in the province of Ontario, Canada, you are required by law, governed by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO), to hold General Liability Insurance with coverage up to $2,000,000, in order to maintain an active registration number. An active registration number is needed to legally practice within the province of Ontario.

There are a few companies in Ontario that provide Liability Insurance, besides the Ontario Massage Therapist Association (OMTA). The ones that I am familiar with are Lackner McLennan Insurance Ltd., which provides reasonable liability insurance to massage therapists in Ontario, and Impact Insurance Brokers Inc. The best way to investigate what each company has to offer is to view their policies online or call for a brochure. Do not forget to read all the fine print in their policies and terms.

The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario may also have some insight into the different insurance companies that offer General Liability Insurance to massage therapists. I hope that I have provided some insight into your search The Massage Therapy 101 website may have some helpful links in our mailbag section. Best of luck with your search!
