Massage Table Information

Question:

I have just become certified as a massage therapist and am looking for a massage table. I have noticed that many of the tables have a working weight and a static weight. Could you please tell me what the difference is?

Thank you!

Answer:

The difference between a working weight and a static weight is simple. Working weight is the weight of the client plus the weight the therapist would add when an increase in pressure is applied (the weight a therapist puts on the table while working). On the other hand, static weight is a stationary weight with no movements. The static weight is always a much higher number. Most massage tables can support approximately 2,000-pounds static weight and 500-pounds working weight.

When shopping around for a massage table is to consider the "UL listing." This means that the table has been tested by an independent laboratory. Only the best massage tables have this certification of quality. By acquiring a UL listed table, you are demonstrating your commitment to the safety of your clients. You may find that having a UL listed table is an advantage, should a question of liability ever arise.
