Gender Specifics
Question:
Hello, Im looking forward to starting school and becoming a certified massage therapist, however, Im wondering if the gender of an individual has any major bearing on their becoming a successful massage therapist? For instance, are females more successful then males in this type of business?
Thanks,
- Maverick
Answer:
Honestly, I would have to admit that gender does have an impact on a massage therapists career. However, it also depends on the individual, the type of practice and the location of the practice.
Overall, there are more female massage therapists than male massage therapists, and as an increasing number of spas and retreat centers pop up throughout North America, I find that females are more drawn to this type of setting. Male massage therapists, on the other hand, seem to be drawn more into clinical-type practices, sports centers and rehabilitation clinics. Therefore, I think the answer to your question depends on your own personal preference for the work environments mentioned above.
If you have done research on the type of massage setting you would like to practice in, you will already have an idea of how successful your job search will be. However, remember when youre planning your career goals and objectives, that it usually takes about a good year to establish yourself as a massage therapist regardless of if youre male or female. Good Luck!
