Income Information

Question:

As I was searching the web for salary negotiation info, I ran across your site. I was hoping you could help me with something. I am a massage therapist in the state of Utah. I have ten years experience. My focus has been neuromuscular therapy. I am working toward certification in the St. John method with three of five courses completed. I love massage and bodywork and I have worked in a chiropractor's office, day spa and resort setting, in addition to a small private practice. For the past two winters, I have worked at a 4 diamond ski resort in Park City. My weekly pay checks (I work four days a week) were anywhere from $600-$1,200. The money in the winter was good, but summers are dead. Given my variety and years of experience, where do I begin negotiating a good/wage? I have always been either paid for spot-work or as an independent, so I really haven't a clue. I would be able to help develop spa programs and treatments, promote the business, help run the office and work with patients/clients.

I would welcome any help regarding negotiating a good wage for myself.

Thanks
Patty LMT
Very informative and interesting site, by the way!

Answer:

This is a great question as at times it can be difficult to put value on your skills -especially when you have worked independently. Start by asking around at different clinics in the area. For example, take a survey so you are able to see what the average chiropractic assistant and massage therapist makes. You will also want to figure out what income would satisfy you. Take into account what you made in the past, the different perks that went with your past jobs and the extra training that you received. Remember to point out your assets and any additional courses and training youve undergone when negotiating. Take some time to think about the figures and to compare the wage offered thoroughly before making a final decision. It sounds like you have a lot of experience and knowledge to bring to a clinic. The job market may be very competitive, but you have numerous marketable assets to bring to the table when negotiating. Browse the Massage Therapy 101 mailbag questions for additional information on income to help you prepare.

Best of luck!
