Income and Tuition Fees

Question:

Hello,

I'm thinking of going to school for massage therapy but I'm not sure about the average yearly income. Does this website have a link or any type of information on the average income for a massage therapist?

Also the school that offers this program charges about 10-thousand dollars for a 9-month program. Is this tuition fee on average for this career? Your response will help me greatly with my decision.

Answer:

There are several pages, links and questions on MassageTherapy101 that will give you insight into a massage therapist's income potential.

Overall, a massage therapist's income will vary depending on these factors:

  • A massage salary varies depending on if you work for someone else or if you own a business.
  • A massage therapist's hours are very flexible. Your salary will vary depending on how many hours you work in a week.
  • Every state has a standard set of fees for massage therapy. You will have to find a balance between setting a competitive price and making decent money depending on the city you're working in.
  • A massage therapist's income will also be dependant on their client base. For example, massaging 5 clients at $65 per hour provides an excellent income, but if you're just starting out you may only have 1 client per day.
  • If you have your own massage therapy business keep in mind that you won't be paid for holidays, and you won't make money if you're off sick.

Check out the Massage Mailbag section, where you will find many questions that already answer this very common question. There are also many other questions concerning massage school requirements, other resources on salaries, average hourly rates, massage career options and advice for starting your own business that will help you make your decision.

Massage Therapy school tuition ranges from school to school and from state to state. Shorter 100-hour programs can cost as little as $1000; while more advanced massage therapy programs can cost as high as $12,000. Most federally accredited schools offer financial assistance as the tuition is high for massage therapy training.

Check the MassageTherapy101 website for links to help you find an accredited massage school in your area.

Good luck! I sure hope this helps with your decision.
